Nissan Almera 2200cc SXE Diesel Hatchback 2004

The first visual impressions of this car wasn't really too good at first because I had previously a sleek stylish looking 206 compared to the more bulky rounded look of the Almera. However my opinion was quickly changed once I had a look at the inter...

I' ve had a 2001 Sport+ 2.2DTi from new that was a stopgap car. Only 110bhp but enough torque to amble around town in 4th gear on tick over uphill or overtake without dropping a gear. I' ve averaged 47.8mpg in 3 years, 55mpg on a quick trip from Hertfordshire to Cornwall and back at an indicated 70 to 80mpg @ 2600revs. As for reliability, not even a bulb has blown. I' m not thinking of changing, PoL.

I got the 136 bhp model, what a car for a diesel. The power is there when I need it (impudent boy racers in there converted 1.2 corsa's) and on average 50 to 60 miles to the gallon cruising. This car has everything even SAT Nav. I can only say one...

Update:
Had this car for just under four years, purchased at 32K miles, now has 82K miles. Not a single problem during the 50K miles I have driven it. The engine is smoother than ever and the auto gears shift smoothly. It looks rubbish but it does what a car should do!

UPDATE:
Right, 5 years on and the Almera has blotted it's reliability big time. I had just done about 150 high speed miles, well 70mph, with another 40 odd to do when the front offside suspension collapsed. Luckily, I was fed up with motorways and dual carriageways and doing about 30mph on a country lane when it happened.
The suspension plate that holds the spring had buckled and the spring had broke in 3 pieces. What went first I do not know but a piece of spring jammed into my tyre and put a 6 inch gash in the tyre! 2 minutes earlier, I was doing an indicated 75mph on the A120. I think I was a lucky man that night. It was a Sunday, raining and the RAC were brilliant.
In 38 years of driving, I have always got home under my own steam, until now, well done RAC.
The garage where I bought the car, in West Essex (London borough) did not want to know, as did Nissan, even though I made it clear I did not want any compensation. I hoped that they would be interested in terms of safety and check other Almeras of that age.
Because of the design, I had to have 2 coils, 2 suspension legs, 2 shock absorbers, a new tyre and a new stud bolt and nut because it had jammed on (common fault on early Primeras but not on Almeras) all for the princely sum of ÂŁ616. My local garage in Halstead charged ÂŁ40 per hour and done an excellent job.
Other than that the fuel consumption from new is now 50.6mpg and fortunately nothing else has gone wrong at all except for 2 headlight bulbs that blew within 3 weeks of each other.
Because of the problems, I have to drop a peach from 5 to 4.
UPDATE: 9 years on and I still have the car. Not bad for a stop gap. Decided to improve the town driving by getting Superchips involved. MPG from new is now 55.7 and I do not drive in a sedate way with economy in mind. I can in the summer months get 700 miles to a tank of diesel (55 litre tank).
The conversion was carried out at 95,000 miles and while the town driving has changed the car in a superb way, the acceleration has been more subdued, has improved it making the car even better for the long runs.
The drivers sport seat is still much better than modern cars due to the ample leg support that it gives and the way it can be adjusted.
I have now done 140,000 miles and I am still yet to top up the oil in between services.
For a car that you want to go from a to b with no fuss and be used as a car should be, then this must surely be one of the most under-rated cars that have ever been made.
Because of the suspension fracas, I still will give it 4 peaches. Maybe I'm a bit harsh on the old girl so if I keep it for another few years then she may make the elusive 5 peach.
