Now on 170K. Yearly service. No problems. The worst I can think to say is that the idle speed can be a bit unpredictable. Having read all the Mk 3 & 4 comments, I'm glad I never upgraded!

Possible one of the most reliable Golf's ever built. Had it 3 years and all I've had to replace is tyres (obviously), expansion bottle (a whole £14.00). Now it needs a new clutch at 84k miles. Not bad I think for the age.

Quite simply the best car I've ever owned. 205000 miles, engine and gearbox never touched other than servicing. Original clutch, shocks etc. Body only minor rust. Do they still build them like this?
