Over the years, we have gradually come to a theory why this is a common problem in some cars.
To keep costs down or just bad designing, some sensors share the same wire or fuse or both, so if a sensor which is the first in line were to go wrong, then that could affect one or all the other sensors on that line.
Now this is getting complicated because if a sensor that is being affected by the duff one is linked to another sensor, which is on a different line, then that too can be affected and so on.
This is why the main dealer mechanics tell you that the computer can’t find anything wrong when it is plugged in probably because the computer hasn’t been programmed sufficiently well enough.
Meanwhile, Joe Soap, manager of a good specialist garage, knows what his brain is used for and tells you probably what is causing your problem.
One other theory of ours is it seems to be happening to expensive to make cars and are trying to sell them cheaper to compare with the reliable oriental makes.
If anyone has any better theories, please let us know. PoL.

The Golf Diesel is a very powerful engine, have no doubt about that and that is the reason why the engine takes longer than normal diesels to warm up.
Heat produced in the combustion process goes to produce more power rather than warm the engine and therefore the cabin via the heater matrix. This is not a problem to the life of the engine, but it can be annoying for the occupants in the winter.
There are after-market electric heaters on sale, so I would go for one of them if it is too uncomfortable.
If only the dealers were honest and say why this happens instead of shrugging their shoulders and saying nowt. Still what do you expect from a spannerless garage! PoL.

UPDATE:
The car has refused to start on a number of occaisions - VW assist could not help on any occasion so the car was towed to VW garage. It has now been in three times for over a week each time. It has now had the fuel filter assembly and fuel pump replaced and all teh injector seals replaced. On a three year old car i find this amazing. To be fair to the dealer they have been great and een sent the technicians to our house one day to fault find on the road as the fault is not always apparent. It's been ok now for a month or so. Alos at it's first MOT (54000miles) it required all new brake discs - however the front pads had loads of life lieft in them so were reused? The dealers can't explain why pads outlast discs. I hav contacted VW customer services and they have ignored the questions as it's obviousley to complicated for them to sort out. This car has been a nightmare through and through.

UPDATE
I have now sold the car on as I gave up on the dealer trying to resolve the outstanding faults. The interior door trim panels cannot be sourced because VW have changed the supplier of these and the fabric inserts are of different material.Apparently VW's comment to this is that as the car is a limited edition they do not stock many spares for this model. Mmm...... If I sent you all the info on each garage visit, I would no doubt have the longest comment in history on your site Anyway due to the VW's very poor after sales, I have sold the car on and now awaiting the December delivery of my Mini Cooper S Works from my local BMW dealer. By the way VW did give me a goodwill gesture of Ł200 - Wow.....

The only true test for us commoners is to brim the tank, reset the odometer and drive until it needs filling again. Go to the same garage and pump and brim again. Note the litres, then multiply them by .22 and hey presto, will give you gallons. Next divide them into your mileage and you get your mpg, (I think that' s the way). Do that for several months and you will get a good idea how your car is going, PoL.

UPDATE:
Further to my earlier remarks on the early release Golf GTi... reading through some other comments has reminded me of the many small irritations this car has provided, and the poor and blandly indifferent service provided at VW dealerships Negatives: brake fluid regularly needs topping up, VW don't know why. Creaks and rattles all around the dashboard. Weird fluttering rattle somewhere behind the glove box when accelerating, inaudible needless to say, to VW mechanics. Anti-lock seems awfully keen Level of service from VW generally very poor. Car is never cleaned after servicing, typically comes back dirtier than it went in Go the extra mile for the customer? No need obviously as it compares very badly with the standard of service I used to get from Mazda and even Rover Not a bad car, just ordinary, and poor value.

UPDATE
I forgot to mention. The dealer offered me a free 1st Service on the 1st Golf Mk4 as I was so cheesed off when I changed it They said that they would transfer it to the new vehicle. Lo and behold when I presented the letter to service boys they would not honour the agreement. 'VW Customer Service' for you. I did get a new set of alloys out of them; this replaced the 12 stars that I ordered when new 18 months later the lacquer had decided to lift. I was surprised that they replaced them, but found out they had been discontinued. This was maybe the reason they were trying to retain my customer loyalty I replaced the car shortly after with a Golf GTTDi 130 and so far I am pleased with it apart from the usual 'Golf Rattles'. 18 months later and 27,000 miles it seems to be the best one I’ve had. Will I replace it with the new Mk5 Golf next year? the answer is NO!

UPDATE:
I've had the car for 2 years travelling 36,000 to 55,000 miles and I have been impressed with the overall performance, but.....it has had lots of faults.

When we got the car the rear driver side central locking failed (According to VW dealers this is common fault) costing Ł320 to fix. Apparently, the fronts ones are most likely fail.
The tailgate windscreen wiper jet did not work (tube inside Windscreen washer motor shattered). VW believe this only occurs if the incorrect amount of antifreeze is added to the washer supply. In my case I would tend to agree with VW. Unfortunately, this failure caused the interior light connector to the tailgate lock to fail. I had to replace the ‘wipermotor’ & ‘tailgate lock’.

The interior light switch fitted to the sunshade also failed and I was told this is also a common failure for Golf IV.

Just recently the car stalled on de-acceleration – a problem some other contributors to this site have had. The garage was able to plug in their diagnostic tool and discover that my throttle valve housing needed replacing costing Ł406 to fix!! (the throttle valve housing was Ł300 alone!).

I’ve also noticed that the airbag warning light comes on – again VW replaced the drivers side airbag loom costing Ł28 for loom and another Ł70 for labour.

The radio reception is very poor whatever radio you put in. (Its a bit frustrating, since I can’t do much to improve it even though I’m an Electronic Design Engineer)

The general performance of the car is very pleasing and it scores very well in crash tests see euroncap.co.uk.

Its surprising so many problems have occurred, but no breakdowns. I can’t really recommend the Golf for hassle free motoring. Perhaps a Honda would have been wiser.

I’m happy to discuss any faults I’ve mentioned with others.
