UPDATE:
I'm downgrading the rating from 2 peaches to 1 lemon.

The paint finish is not holding up very well to daily wear and tear. It scratches far too easily, and doesn't have the depth or hardness of, say VW or Vauxhall. Extended driving with low sun has revealed that the sunvisors are useless. They are too narrow when facing forwards, and leave a large gap between the right hand edge of the visor, and the A-pillar. When swung to the side, I sit sufficiently far back that the visor serves no purpose whatsoever, and I end up driving one handed with the other hand masking the sun out ! The climate control is not very good. In the mornings especially if, say, 20deg is selected, it feels like it heats the interior to 30deg before it notices it is too hot, and then starts chilling it back down again. The problem is it spends 5-10 minutes sorting itself out. The car is now at 40,000 miles, and the day before the family holiday, the EGR pipe on the turbo failed (observed by a very load whoosh noise every time the turbo operated). After desperately ringing around 8 dealers in the area, I managed to persuade one to look at it. Fortunately, they were able to fix it the same day, so the holiday was not ruined. However, since the car was just out of warranty, it was a costly repair. A couple of weeks later, the fuel gauge decided to be intermittent, and can sometimes take a couple of hours of driving before indicating full. I presume it is the sender, rather than the gauge, because the fuel computer also tries to tell me I have 80 miles left on tank, even when I am pulling away from the garage forecourt, having just filled it up ! I can only presume that another expensive (and uncalled for) repair is around the corner. I decided to buy a Mondeo, rather than a Passat, because I believed that Volkswagen's quality & reliabililty had lost its edge, and that Ford's was better. At 40,000 miles, this one has now been shown the red card. It is just suffering too many faults. Whilst I did plan to keep it for another couple of years, if the unexpected repair bills keep rolling in, it will be gone a lot sooner. Pity - it was almost a good car.

UPDATE 2
45,000 miles, and now the OSR door latch had to be replaced because the central locking function became intermittent. Another unscheduled, and costly, repair. A clonking noise has started making itself heard from behind the steering wheel, whenever the wheel is spun round quickly (e.g. when parking). The dealer looked at it, and at first thought it was a known problem, with a known fix (hurrah !). Unfortunately, this fix only applies to earlier steering columns, but not mine. Therefore, apart from offering me a new steering column (at my considerable expense), they could do nothing to fix it. Having assured me that it is not unsafe, I have left it for now.

In summary, between 10,000 miles and 45,000 miles : - Oil pressure sender failed (oil light on) - All 4 alloy wheels changed under warranty, due to excessive corrosion - EGR pipe failed on turbo - intermittent fuel gauge - failed OSR door catch (central locking) - Clonking from steering column (no solution available) I no longer wonder if something is going to go wrong. I wonder when, and what it will be - and how much it will cost me.
Needless to say, I am currently reviewing my financial position, to see if I can afford to offload this car 2 years earlier than planned, and get something a bit more suitable.

Other buyers be warned - Ford lost $6.5bn last year......I reckon they're cutting corners at the customer's cost.

UPDATE 3
47,000 miles. Rear wiper has started misbehaving. Normally it has 2 modes. Mode 1 : After a wash, it does 3 wipes and stops. Mode 2 : It is in intermittent mode, and wipes intermittently. Its new mode (Mode 3) is wiping the rear screen continuously, and stopping only when it feels like it, regardless of what I do with the column stalk. I have also just noticed some rust starting to bubble through on the inside bottom edges of the rear O/S door. Aaaaagh!! This is a 4 year old car. This should not happen. Even Fiat have this sorted nowadays. This is the most unreliable car I have ever owned, apart from a Hillman Imp that I owned when I was a student (many years ago). This is definitely my last Ford. I am sure "Update 4" is not far around the corner. Please downgrade to 4 lemons, as a warning to the others !!!

UPDATE 4 Make it 5 lemons!!
Almost 50,000 miles and the prophecy has been fulfilled! The glow plug light came on and the engine completely died. After rolling to a halt (luckily I was on a suburban street, not a motorway), with no power steering and all the usual symptons of no engine, I managed to restart successfully. Today, 1 day later, it did it again. However, this time it took several minutes of failed starts to get it going again. Needless to say it is on its way to the dealer again (as soon as they can accomodate me in their busy schedule, and provide a courtesy car....so probably will be Xmas.....). Oh, and finally, the new alloy wheels that Ford replaced under warranty (when the old ones corroded) have now started to corrode ! Will I buy Ford ? Never again. The good news is that on 1 December, Mazda launch the brand new Mazda 6. No prizes for guessing where I'm going with my cheque book.

Phew. Thanks for the updates on your car and I see that Fords are still alive and well.
Remember, Mazda are closely associated with Ford and although it is usually just the floorpan and a few odds and ends with the important bits belonging to Mazda. But, check it out first to see who makes what and where it goes. PoL.
